Quote Of The Moment

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.

-- Julian of Norwich (1342 - 1412?)

This brief note serves as a second "ping" to the TBTF mailing list to excise the dead addresses prior to resuming regular publication. Please indulge me while I piggyback on this necessary bandwidth to solicit your help for a friend.

Recently the Kaycee Nicole hoax [1], [2] racheted up the level of skepticism that Netizens will bring to any sad tale they read online. Read on with skepticism if you must, but please take my word that the story is true and the need is urgent.

Friend Indeed

I've formed a not-for-profit corporation, Friend Indeed [1], to collect and distribute donations that enable the lives of worthy people. Friend Indeed is incorporated in Massachusetts under section 501(c)3 of the US tax code. This means that US citizens should be able to deduct contributions to Friend Indeed from their federal and state taxes. (Consult your tax advisor if uncertain.)

Friend Indeed's first beneficiary is Marcia Blake. Marcia is a TBTF Irregular [2], an old Net hand, a smart and savvy Web strategy consultant [3], and a dear friend of mine. Here's her corporate bio [4] and the more informal "real bio" [5].

Marcia struggles under a load of misfortune that in a just universe wouldn't happen to krill. She soldiers on and never loses heart. She is my role model for the glass-half-full worldview.

In 1999 Marcia was working as the COO for an Internet startup in San Diego. She was a full-time employee with medical coverage under Kaiser, the country's first HMO. She developed a problem in her left hip and was advised by Kaiser to have it replaced. The operation was scheduled for January, 2000.

There is no polite way to say this: the surgeon botched the job abysmally. Marcia obtained three other surgeons' opinions and jumped through all the requisite hoops to prove to Kaiser that they had messed up her hip. Finally Kaiser scheduled revision surgery with a different doctor. By now time was short. Marcia's committed span with the company was coming to an end and she had arranged to move back to her home in Santa Fe just after the scheduled date of the second operation.

At the last minute and without explanation, Kaiser informed Marcia that the surgeon had become unavailable. The revision surgery could not be rescheduled in the remaining few days and she moved back to New Mexico, uninsured and uninsurable.

Read Marcia's account [6] of the series of events up to last April. The news since that time has not been good; follow the blow-by-blow in the forum [7] she set up to solicit help and advice.

Her options are rapidly dwindling. The botched artificial hip is damaging bone every time she moves. No one knows when the damage will be irreversible.

I volunteered to be Marcia's fund raiser.

Please visit Friend Indeed [1] and contribute. At present the site accepts donations via PayPal, e-Gold, and check / money order. I'll add Kagi and credit cards as soon as some more of the incorporation paperwork clears.
